Halloween Safety Tips
The Canadian Association of Optometrists has some Halloween safety recommendations.
Cosmetic lenses
Consult an optometrist before wearing any lenses and always obtain them from an eye care professional. (see our article on this subject)
Makeup
Always use hypoallergenic products and ensure that any face paints or additives contained therein are Health Canada approved.
You will find the list of Health Canada recalls here: https://recalls-rappels.canada.ca/en
Also, make sure to use suitable makeup for the eye area if it is part of your costume (liners, eye shadows, etc.).
Be careful as some other products may have ingredients not approved to be placed towards the eyes.
Disguise
Try as much as possible to have a safe costume.
Avoid sharp or pointed objects (e.g. sword, dagger…) or otherwise, make sure they are attached to the costume, especially for a child.
If you wear a mask at eye level, make sure it does not obstruct vision.
If you or your child get a peek, get checked out.
After a stroke you may observe redness and/or pain in the eye, a discolored eye, a bloody eye, sudden and or temporary loss of vision.
The trauma to your eye may be more serious than you feel/think.
Visibility
Be visible in the dark. Place ribbons or reflectors on your costume or treat bag.
Pack a flashlight or portable LED to see and be seen.
